As Hulu prepares to launch a second season of As Secret Lives of Mormon Wives this spring, the show's executive producers noted that there are “endless seasons of stories” MomTok still needs to tell.
“There are so many stories that haven't been covered — just the 'secret' lives of women,” EP Georgia Berger told TheWrap, adding that there was “so much more” that the team had to cut out due to time constraints. “They're also very young… and they all have two or three young children and… they're just starting out. Hopefully it'll be long enough to see them develop as well.”
As for the series, It has been renewed for an additional 20 episodes on Hulu – With filming set to begin next week – EP Danielle Pistotnik said the team had “endless seasons of stories” in mind after being in constant contact with the women.
News of the renewal came after the launch of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” which focuses on the Mormon breeders who together raised what was known as MomTok, as well as the subsequent “soft swinging” scandal that broke up the group. The series stars Taylor Frankie Paul, the self-proclaimed founder of MomTok, as well as Demi Engman, Jane Affleck, Jessie Ngatekura, Lili Taylor, Maisie Neely, Michaela Matthews, and Whitney Levitt.
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives earned 409 million minutes of streaming in its recent weekend, according to Nielsen, and has become a Hulu movie. The most-attended season's impromptu show of the year so farBased on three days of streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
“It's impossible to process – our brains can't process something of that magnitude,” Pistotnik said of the event, and EP Lisa Filippelli noted that Pistotnik knew the series would be a success from “day one”.
In a scandal that made national headlines in 2022, Pistotnik met Macy Neely's husband, Jacob Neely, while in Cruzeiro when she was 13, and Pistotnik finally contacted his wife when Macy was looking for a manager. The women immediately realized that Mayci had connected Pistotnik with the rest of the MomTokkers, and the idea for the show was born.
“I probably spent a week working with everyone when I went up to Lisa and said, ‘We have a show here.’ These girls have stars,” Pistotnik said. “The stuff you see on TikTok is happy and good, but it’s 1% of the depth of women.” “
“There's a lot, there's a lot here and it's much deeper than we thought,” Filippelli added.
Going forward, Filippelli has a team of producers and cast members with “immediate interest” from Hulu, allowing the team to “get to work very, very quickly,” with Filippelli saying, “I would say this is one of the two best things we've done.” “At all.”
The team is already familiar with Hulu's unscripted playlist, and the EPs are also being created by the Disney-owned streamer to understand the importance of social media for a show intended for a creator. “Marketing is always going to be done online, and we really need someone who understands… (as women) it will continue to be the way we were online, and that has been a benefit, not a hindrance,” Filippelli said.
Along with the drama — which will certainly resume in full force when the series returns in the spring of 2025 — the EPs hope to continue to shed light on how women push the boundaries of what's typically expected of wives and more Mormons.
“In the Los Angeles area, this may not be overly progressive, but for Utah, they are really crushing their parents,” Filippelli said. “It's really feminist — what he does — and he really… pushes the boundaries in a way that's hard to live with, especially with the education he gave him.”
