The SSL 2 and 2+ MKII desktop interfaces bring 32-bit conversion and a slight reshuffle to the design across both of the popular models.
In 2020, SSL branched out with its first-ever budget recording solutions in the form of the 2 and 2+ USB audio interfaces. A major hit with musicians, the 2 and 2+ grew the brand in a new direction, as a new generation of users could get their hands on SSL products.
SSL 2 and 2+ MKII
More than four years later, SSL has stuck with its guns, carrying the same look and feel over to the new 2 and 2+ MK2 interfaces. On the front of both models, the first thing you’ll notice is that there are now two headphone outputs and a pair of instrument inputs.
The difference here is that like the previous version, the 2+ MK2 has independent controls for the A and B headphone mixes, and the ability to adjust the output level of its additional TRS outputs on the rear panel (channels 3 & 4).
The channel input controls remain largely the same as the previous model, with the subtle addition of LED lights below the phantom power, line, and high-pass filter switches, so you can easily see what is active.
Meanwhile, the AKM AD/DA converters have been updated to 32-bit, which keeps up with the latest standards, and the outputs are DC coupled, allowing you to send CV signals from your DAW.
Overall, the improvements on the previous models are slight, but there’s no need to reinvent the wheel when you’ve already created a winning design. As the flagship SSL 12 offers digital outputs, we can look forward to its MKII version upgrade in the future.
