Like every other big tech company this year, Meta will be keen to show how it plans to stay relevant in an AI-driven future. Now seven months after the launch of the Apple Vision Pro, which, aside from a small upgrade, isn’t interested in augmented reality (AR), Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now keen to show off his own plans to get back into AR for real.
Empora Zuckerberg isn’t as enthusiastic about the transformation as he was when he rebranded his company, and the union of AI and AR is the way he can still realize the dream of continuous virtual worlds. It may seem less Or soon a playerBut if AR glasses are ever developed, they could still allow Meta to control another part of our digital world. And to help them do that, a cheap, modern VR headset wouldn’t be a bad thing.
With everything in mind, here are some of the things we hope to see at Meta Connect 2024, which actually starts on September 25 and runs for two days.
Orion AR Glasses

Unlike the Quest 3, which embraces its vision entirely and uses cameras to show a low-quality view of the world, Orion can let you see the real world like a regular pair of glasses. The main difference, of course, is that it looks much less sophisticated than those devices.

Back at Meta Connect 2022, Zuckerberg showed off how the company was thinking about AR glasses, along with an interesting pulse-based controller:

Cheaper version of Quest 3
Instead of an updated headset, all signs point to a simplified version of the Quest 3 called the Quest 3S, Reports Bloomberg Marco Gorman. Recently uploaded photos The Quest Link app itself confirms the headset’s existence. According to Gurman, the company is aiming to make it much cheaper than the current version, presumably in the $300 or $400 range, while still offering an experience close to the Quest 3.
The latest release indicates that it will start at just $299. The user shares a clip of an Amazon ad supposedly appearing on Peacock that shows the Quest 3S, complete with price and motor (h/t ). According to the announcement, the 128GB Quest 3S will cost $299, but you may also have other weapon options. It will likely replace the Quest 2, which remains in the lineup at $299, shortly after. So why is Meta Varia so different? There’s a huge performance gap between the Quest 3 and Quest 2, making life difficult for both developers. With a cheaper device similar to the Quest 3, and likely using the same processor, it would be easier to create games that could scale to two lower prices. According to Bloomberg Gorman, we are also considering launching some new phone models without a driver, which will further reduce the price.

Expect Meta to show off more ways to leverage AI features in Quest headphones and our Ray-Ban smart glasses. The company launched multimedia AI search resources in January, which let you ask Meta AI what objects or reference points you’re looking for, or for quick translations. Based on our testsHowever, these resources were surprisingly incomplete.
The objective will periodically discuss ways to improve and implement existing resources. Big Lama Language Model 3.1 (LLM), which positions itself as a concurrent open-source code from Google and two LLMs from OpenAI. In particular, the company notes that Llama 3.1 offers significantly improved resources for translation, math, and general knowledge. There’s certainly room for the goal of bringing new AI resources powered by Llama 3.1 to our Ray-Ban smart glasses, but given the limited processing power and battery life, we’ll likely have to wait for an updated model before we see something truly innovative.
