Weaver starred in the original “Alien” movie as Ellen Ripley, and for Spaeny, the appeal of her character was how “down-to-earth” she was.
“It’s meio que — that’s what survival becomes. You don’t expect her to be a hero, you know?” Spaeny explained to TheWrap ahead of the film’s release. “It was interesting.”
But what helped Spaeny find more of her own space in the “Alien” series was the fact that Weaver’s role was originally written for both genders, only to coincidentally be cast as a woman. As a result, Spaeny noted, Weaver had “a lot of room” to really play her character.
“I understand that she was consciously aware of not explaining what it means to be a woman in a science fiction film,” added Spaeny. “I understand that she opened this path, and it was easier for me to enter this franchise as a woman.
