Sure, the Akuma no Mi Quokka doesn't look particularly powerful by any means, but it would still give him an edge in battle, as well as any other Akuma no Mi, as Lucci suggested in Enies Lobby. Being like little kangaroos, we know that Oda could have a lot of fun with this fruit and give it interesting abilities. Obviously, this would be one of the more successful schools, but it's still very interesting.

The second reason is that Roger and Ace have similar personalities.
Dadan himself confirmed that Roger and Ace are exactly the same and Garp confirmed this to be true. They both have very fiery personalities, and this could be represented by Mera Mera no Mi, which would have been perfect for these two characters.
