The new Zoom H1 XLR is a 32-bit float portable microSD card recorder and USB audio interface without built-in microphones for a change.

For years, the Zoom handheld recorders have been synonymous with video capture, field recording, and capturing live band performances and DJ sets from music venues.

The Zoom H1 XLR has a rather stripped-back design compared to some of the other models in the Zoom portable recording family. Without touch-screen operation or built-in condenser mics, the H1 XLR is a simple 2-track 32-bit float 96 kHz recorder that will fit snuggly in the palm of your hand, and into most professional content creation workflows.

More Information

Next to each of the two XLR combo inputs, you’ll find a mic/line selector switch, and the H1 XLR can provide phantom power for external mics. Furthermore, on the left side, there’s a minijack headphone output (or camera audio feed), while the right side has a stereo minijack mic/line input.

During recording, the OLED gives you a real-time waveform display and you can access the basic digital mixer. Meanwhile, both microSDHC and microSDXC card formats are supported at up to 1 TB capacity with the ability to record to microSD card and via the USB audio interface functionality simultaneously.

Battery life is up to 10 hours using two AA batteries, which is somewhat less when phantom power is engaged. However, the H1 XLR will also power via USB-C and has a standard tripod mount built-in. As an audio interface, it supports Windows, macOS, iOS and Android devices.

Overall, the H1 XLR should appeal to professionals immediately due to the no-nonsense simplicity of its design. Without too much menu diving or unused built-in mics, this is sure to find its way into your backpack and onto your camera rig.
