D16 Group has released Nithonat 2. The new version of the virtual TR-606 comes with loads of improvements, including a greatly expanded FX section, an easy-to-use sequencer with drag&drop MIDI, new factory content, and much more. Is Nithonat 2 the best software emulation of the TR-606 ever?

D16 Group’s plugin emulations of vintage Roland boxes enjoy an excellent reputation. After Drumazon 2 and Nepheton 2, the Polish developer has now given Nithonat a big makeover. The new version of the virtual TR-606 comes with so many new features that it’s almost an entirely new plugin – and much more than just an emulation of the 606.

As before, Nithonat 2 offers far more sound tweaking options than the famously limited TR-606. In addition to volume, all sounds offer a decay knob, and many have additional options such as tunetoneattack, or snappy. This makes the plugin much more versatile than the original in terms of the sounds it can produce.

One of the biggest improvements over the previous version is the sequencer, which now offers an easy-to-use grid interface. If you prefer to record live, there’s a tap function for real-time recording. Furthermore, the new sequencer offers convenient control over the dynamics and accents, as well as articulations like flams and sub steps. This means that the new version of Nithonat is capable of much more dynamic and varied patterns than the predecessor. And they’ve finally added drag&drop MIDI, so you can easily export patterns to a track in your DAW for further editing.

The effects section has also received a major overhaul. To begin with, Nithonat 2 offers a dedicated channel strip for every drum sound with high-cut and low-cut filters, two parametric EQ bands, and a compressor. Furthermore, there are two FX send busses with a wide selection of effects such as dynamicsdistortionbitcrusherdelayreverb, and EQ. And lastly, you get a full master section with a multiband compressor and limiter to put the finishing touches on your mix.

It goes without saying that Nithonat 2 ships with lots of new factory content to showcase the new features. According to D16 Group, over 900 presets and patterns are included.
