In August 2023, a rumor surfaced that Samsung had begun testing the Galaxy Z Flip 6 with a 50MP primary rear camera. That rumor was spot on, a new leak confirms. The upcoming Flip foldable recently popped up on the Camera FV-5 platform to confirm the rumored camera upgrade. The device also picked up the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) regulatory certification.

Galaxy Z Flip 6’s rumored big camera upgrade confirmed

Last year, Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip 5 with an unchanged camera system. It featured the same sensors with the same specs as the Galaxy Z Flip 4—a 12MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide lens, and 10MP selfie camera. However, days after its launch, we got word that the company plans to equip its next Flip phone with a 50MP main camera. It was very early but we were looking at a massive camera upgrade.

Fast forward to today, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 looks set for this upgrade. 91Mobiles recently spotted the global version of the upcoming foldable (model number SM-F741) on the Camera FV-5 platform. The listing confirmed a 50MP main camera. To be precise, it says a 12.5MP primary rear camera but it should be the default output with 2×2 pixel binning. In other words, the phone has a 50MP sensor but produces 12.5MP photos by default.

This is a massive camera upgrade for Samsung’s most popular foldable lineup. Flip phones have always outsold the Fold series and it was high time the company offered better cameras. The new leak also reveals that the new 50MP camera has an f/1.8 aperture and boasts EIS (electronic image stabilization) and OIS (optical image stabilization). Details about the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s other cameras are still under wraps.

The new foldable is nearing its launch

Samsung is closing in on its next Galaxy Unpacked event where it will unveil the Galaxy Z Flip 6 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Watch 7 series, and probably a few more devices, including a new pair of TWS earbuds. The event is rumored to take place on July 10. A market release of the devices may follow later in the month.

While we wait for official confirmation of the dates from Samsung, the upcoming foldable has picked up regulatory approval from India’s BIS. The agency certified the device with the same model number (SM-F741B). It previously certified the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s batteries with model numbers EB-BF741ABE and EB-BF741ABY. More details about the device may surface in the coming weeks.
