The more I see of EFNOTE, the more they impress me. This Japanese manufacturer seems to get the balance of style and substance just right. The 3X is no exception to this. It manages to deliver big on features and yet its physical presence is sleek, minimal and stylish.

First up, you get four toms, two floor and two mounted. There’s a decent-sized 12″x4″ kick pad and a 12″x4″ triple-zone snare. There are three cymbals, two crash and a ride. These are all triple-zoned with choke. The kit is rounded off by a dual-zone 14″ hi-hat with controller. You’ll have to supply your own hi-hat stand.

All of these are mounted across three Lambda tripod stands These look very cool and take up little space. As for the drum module, it’s the typically slim and stylish variety that EFNOTE are known for. Housed in a brushed aluminium housing, the 3X module features a backlit touchscreen and large control knob.

Within the box are 98 multilayer sounds across 16 preset and 34 user kits. MIDI and audio hook up via 5-pin, USB and Bluetooth. Best of all, there’s a built-in USB audio interface with 8 outs and 2 ins. All drum shells are 6-ply birch wood. The snare drum stand is included.

The Alesis Crimson Mesh kits have always represented a great balance of playability, sound and space-saving. I still have my original Crimson Mesh kit and it’s as good as the day I bought it. The Crimson II SE further expands on that.

Attached to a sturdy tubular frame are three toms and three cymbals. There are two crashes, both dual-zone and chokable. The ride is a three-zone affair and there’s a dual-zone hi-hat with an independent foot controller. The snare is 12″ in diameter and the floor standing kick drum is 8″.

The Crimson II drum module features 671 sounds which make up 54 preset and 20 user kits. They all feature dynamic articulation which really adds to the authenticity of the sounds whilst playing.

There’s USB and traditional MIDI connections, as well as main and aux audio outputs. You can feed in your own audio for playing along to and there’s a dedicated headphone socket too. The rack and snare stand are provided but you will have to supply your own kick drum pedal.

Roland TD-50K2 V-Drums Kit

Roland’s top-of-the-line e-Drum kit, the TD-50, comes in a couple of configurations. The TD-50KV2 features a larger kick and deeper shells. The K2 is for drummers who require a smaller footprint.

However, both versions centre around the class-leading TD-50X drum module with its Prismatic sound modelling technology. It’s a real beast and sounds incredible across all 100 of its built-in kits. It also has a 10-channel USB Audio output so that recording each drum in a DAW is both simple and requires minimal cabling.

The drums consist of a 14″ Digital Mesh Head pad, 3x 10″ mesh head toms and a 14″ mesh head kick pad. There are two dual-zone crash cymbals and an 18″ digital ride as well as a 14″ digital hi-hat. Everything hangs off Roland’s almost industrial MDS-GRAND2 rack.
