It’s thinner and lighter than its predecessor, which makes a big difference.

As we do every year, we’ve asked our readers to choose the very best smartphones of the year. This goes for several categories, and in this article, we’re focusing on foldables. Our readers chose the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 as the very best foldable smartphone of 2024. That does differ from the choice we made, but that’s not as surprising. Our readers stayed loyal to Samsung’s long-standing Fold series. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 does have a lot to offer, so let’s talk more about it.

Thinner, lighter & brighter

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 may look quite similar to its predecessor, but Samsung did made several rather notable improvements here. This handset is both thinner and lighter than its predecessor. It is 14 grams lighter, as it weighs 239 grams. That may not seem like a lot, but trust me, you will notice it when handling the device. We’ve had a much more pleasant experience using this phone due to decreased weight. Its thickness also comes into play, that’s for sure. It is 12.1mm thick when folded compared to 13.4mm of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. That is also something we noticed, both in the hand and in the pocket. Every millimeter counts when it comes to foldables.

On top of it being thinner and lighter, Samsung also improved the crease situation. The crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s display is less visible than it was in the past. That is always a win, and it’s nice to see Samsung move in the right direction in that regard too. The water resistance has also been improved on the Galaxy Z Fold 6, as the device comes with an IP48 certification compared to an IPX8 certification its predecessor offered. The last notable improvement that we’ll mention is in the display sector. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 does offer brighter displays than the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

A familiar formula

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 did stay the same in a number of ways. It has the same main display size as its predecessor, while the resolution didn’t change much. Its cover display is slightly larger, though. Samsung also retained the same 4,400mAh battery, and the same goes for charging too. The phone comes with 25W wired, 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging support.

The company did work on improving the cameras via the software department, but the hardware is the same as it was last year. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a 50-megapixel main camera, backed by a 12-megapixel ultrawide snapper, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. On the main display, an under-display camera is located once again, and it remains unchanged compared to last year’s. This smartphone is a refinement of a well-known formula, and our readers did think it was enough of a change to choose it over all other foldables this year.
