Threads testing curated profile collections, inspired by Bluesky

Threads is testing curated profile collections for users to discover and follow interesting accounts. The new feature will suggest groups of accounts based on popular topics. These will show up when you sign up for Threads or when you’re browsing the “For You” feed.

Curated collections of profiles make it easier to discover relevant content

According to a new report, Threads is testing curated collections around topics like basketball, style and fashion, food, books, pop culture, and more. A “handful” of Threads community leaders curated these collections so you can find accounts you like. This will help new users who might not find interesting content right away.

Notably, it’s worth mentioning that Threads’ new feature is similar to Bluesky’s Starter Packs, which were introduced earlier to help users explore topics easily. This isn’t the first time Threads has taken inspiration from Bluesky. Threads had previously introduced custom feeds, a feature that Bluesky also launched earlier, allowing users to personalize their content streams.

Can curated profile collections help Threads stand out?

Threads is trying to attract users who are looking for alternatives to Twitter, now rebranded as X. Both Threads and Bluesky are competing for that audience. Threads had 35 million sign-ups in November, and right now, Bluesky has over 25 million users. The competition to innovate and retain users is forcing Threads to borrow ideas that will make the app more interesting.

Curated profile collections could help new users get started on Threads. Instead of searching for accounts to follow, they can just pick a topic they like and explore pre-curated profiles. This could also help current users discover new interests and communities within the app.

As Threads is competing with Bluesky, we’ll see how users react to this. Will this be a hit or a miss depends on how the collections land with users and help them find interesting content on the app.
