Samsung patents new detachable strap system for smartwatches

Lately, Samsung patents have revealed new developments that they could be working on. Many of the company’s recent patents have focused on devices with foldable displays. A new Samsung patent goes in a very different direction, describing a new detachable strap mechanism for Galaxy smartwatches.

A security fit is one of the key points in a smartwatch. Normally, sports straps focus on offering extra adjustment options that allow the watch to adapt to your physical activity. It’s not just about comfort, but also about sensor accuracy. An incorrect wrist fit can negatively affect the smartwatch’s readings.

The new detachable strap mechanism for watches patented by Samsung

The new Samsung patent, spotted by 91mobiles, shows a potential new detachable system for the straps of Galaxy Watch devices. The goal could be to offer an even easier detaching/attaching experience and fit. The South Korean giant’s smartwatches, like the latest Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra, already offer a quick-release system for their straps. However, they want to make things even easier for a frustration-free experience.

The patented mechanism consists of three main parts. First, there is a “core,” which in turn is made up of a fixed piece and a piece that moves in relation to the first. Then there is the second key component: the strap. The latter has two pieces and a frame to attach it directly to the core. Placing the strap on the core could be sufficient to connect both parts. The user could also separate the strap into two parts.

“Grooves” would allow for linking the strap and the core

The third key component of the mechanism is the “Grooves.” These hollow cutouts and fastening portions are what allow the link between the strap and the core of the mechanism, as well as multiple levels of adjustment.

There have been no leaks yet about the next generation of Galaxy Watch devices. However, it might not be a surprise if Samsung is working on the new detachable strap mechanism for future smartwatches. That said, that leaves some questions up in the air, such as the potential lack of backward compatibility with the current strap system.
