DJI has announced the DJI Mic Mini, which weighs half as much as the DJI Mic 2. It also costs way less than its elder sibling but offers most of its features.
DJI Mic Mini announced, starting at just $89
DJI, a leading manufacturer of drones and action cameras, has officially launched the “DJI Mic Mini”. It could be considered a slightly scaled-down version of the DJI Mic 2, which the company released earlier this year.
DJI appears to have taken most of the useful features of the popular Mic 2 and shrunk it down, while somehow managing to improve battery life. The DJI Mic Mini sports a significantly lower price tag. Specifically speaking, the DJI Mic Mini starts at just $89.
The new “mini” version consists of a receiver and one or two transmitters with built-in microphones. The mics can be affixed to the subjects either via a clip or magnetic attachment. The receiver connects to a recording device via a 3.5mm cable. DJI has offered a dedicated dial to adjust sound levels.
The receiver can ensure channel separation or it can mix them together. It can work with the two omnidirectional mics simultaneously.
The mic transmitters can reportedly connect directly to smartphones and mobile devices over Bluetooth. Additionally, the DJI Mic Mini is a part of DJI’s OsmoAudio ecosystem. In other words, the transmitters (mics) can connect to other DJI devices like the Osmo Action 5 Pro, Osmo Action 4, or Osmo Pocket 3 without a receiver.
What features just the new mini version lack?
The DJI Mic 2 costs $349, while the just-announced DJI Mic Mini starts at $89. Needless to say, DJI has cut some features, presumably to keep the price low.
The Mic Mini transmitters cannot record backup audio on their own. To address this limitation, users can reportedly rely on recording software, such as DJI’s Mimo app. There’s no support for lav mics on the transmitters. Moreover, the wireless receiver lacks a screen for monitoring audio levels.
Although there are some limitations, DJI claims it has significantly improved the battery life of the wireless mics, promising 11.5 hours on a full charge. Similarly, the wireless receiver can run up to 10.5 hours. The runtime can be further increased using the case.
The DJI Mic Mini is now available on the company’s online store. A few “authorized retail partners,” also sell DJI products. DJI assures shipping starts today.
For $89, buyers get a single mic transmitter, a wireless receiver, and accessories like charging cables and docks. The mic transmitters cost $59 each, while the charging case is priced at $49. Buyers would benefit from the $169 bundle, which includes two microphone transmitters, a wireless receiver, a charging case, and other accessories.
