Behringer Grind is the latest addition to the semi-modular Crave series. Combining a digital multi-engine oscillator section with an analog filter, Grind is the first synth of the series that’s not entirely based on a Moog design. Grind is now ready for pre-order.
Behringer Grind
A couple of days ago, Behringer surprised us with the latest addition to its semi-modular series. Grind is a cross between the multi-engine module Brains and the fully analog Crave. However, its selection of oscillator algorithms differs slightly from Brains. With 24 digital sound engines, Grind can produce a wide range of hybrid sounds.
If you know the Brains module (or Mutable Instruments Plaits, for that matter), the oscillator section will look familiar. There are two buttons for selecting the engine and four knobs for Timbre, Harmonics, Frequency, and Morph. For 15 of the engines, Behringer has once again reached into the Mutable Instruments bag of tricks; nine engines are new. The selection ranges from virtual analog, waveshaper, and FM to Grains, Rain, Noise, and Dust to emulations of the DX7 and TD-3, a wave generator, a vox engine, and more.
The analog 24 dB ladder filter, which is based on a Moog design, came straight from Crave. It can be used in lowpass or highpass mode.
For modulation, Grind has an ADS envelope generator, an analog LFO with triangle and square waves, and a vibrato section. It also inherited Crave’s glide function and CV mixer, as well as the 32-step sequencer that holds up to 64 patterns.
Via 34 patch sockets, you can reconfigure the signal path of the synth and make new modulation connections. The semi-modular design also allows Grind to interact with the other synths of the series or a modular system.

You can now pre-order Behringer Grind from Thomann* for $175 / £156 / €189. While we don’t yet know when it’ll arrive in stock, Behringer says that it’s already shipping from the factory.
