Samsung launched the Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro this year with a revamped design that is totally different from previous generations. The company also integrated AI and quality of life (QoL) features designed to make your daily life easier. In a behind-the-scenes interview, two members of the team behind the Galaxy Buds 3 talked about the planning and development process of the new earbuds.
The Galaxy Buds 3 series planning started with a totally new design
Helen Nam and Donggi Kim from Samsung’s Wearable Product Planning Group revealed interesting details about the development of the Galaxy Buds 3 series. One of Samsung’s goals was to make the earbuds as comfortable as possible. They also had to consider the new stemmed form factor, which they had not experienced yet. The company designed them using 3D hearing data and AI to achieve the ideal fit for most ears.
Samsung totally revamped the design, discarding what they had done in previous Galaxy Buds models. The result seems to have been positive, as reviews and users agree that wearing the company’s new earphones is quite comfortable.
Nam highlights the improved call quality on the Galaxy Buds 3 series. To achieve this, the company combined the new form factor and the power of AI. First, the earbuds’ stems allow the microphones to be slightly closer to the user’s mouth. Additionally, AI-based technology restores voice clarity in challenging conditions, such as noisy environments. Samsung also leveraged these technologies to integrate Live Translate support into Listening Mode.
The team focused on sound quality and smart features
The planning process for the Galaxy Buds 3 series involved visiting multiple speaker stores. The team tested audio products of different types to find the sound quality they were looking for. Kim reveals that they attended in-depth seminars on high-fidelity audio, led by renowned experts. On the other hand, Nam says that they paid close attention to consumer feedback, which led to a more customizable audio experience through EQ tweaking and noise control options.
The team is especially proud of the voice control capabilities of the Galaxy Buds 3 series. Nam says it’s quite comfortable and convenient to be able to control music playback without using your hands. Voice commands also work for adjusting volume levels and answering calls. So, you can have a real hands-free experience like never before.
Expect more AI-powered features in upcoming Galaxy Buds products
The team also talked about the future of the Galaxy Buds series. Currently, Samsung is very focused on developing and implementing AI in its main product lineups. Of course, the Galaxy Buds will also benefit from this. While the company believes that sound quality is quite important, Nam says that additional features for all kinds of scenarios, such as voice controls or Live Translate support, can be even more so. However, this does not imply that Samsung will overlook audio quality. Kim says that the team will continue to work on delivering a high-quality and nuanced sound signature.
Lastly, the team talked a bit about the impact of Samsung’s Galaxy AI suite on the Galaxy Buds 3 series. Kim reveals that the ANC feature is now AI-driven thanks to a new algorithm that analyzes the sound differences across all the mics in real time. Plus, access to interpreter mode on Galaxy phones via earbuds is pretty handy. Basically, the Galaxy Buds 3 let you converse with people in almost any language.
