Gemini, the AI-powered chatbot that aims to replace the classic “Google Assistant” in the future, is becoming more and more functional and convenient. Recently, Google integrated a floating overlay that offers a more consistent user experience and enhances multitasking. Now, the company is taking a new step in this direction by integrating split screen support to some large-screen devices, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
We consider “large-screen devices” to be tablets and foldables (except those with a clamshell form factor). The additional screen inches allow existing apps to offer new use cases that boost aspects like productivity and entertainment. The foldable form factor even enables unique features, such as Google Translate’s dual-screen conversation mode.
Galaxy Z Fold 6 now supports Gemini’s split screen and floating window
As spotted by Mishaal Rahman, select large-screen Android devices, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6, are getting split-screen support for Gemini. You’ll know you’ve received the feature if you see a small white bar at the top of Gemini’s floating overlay. The handle is similar to the classic bottom navigation bar on Android. Once you get it, you’ll be able to swipe from the bar to turn Gemini into a movable floating window. You can also swipe to the left or right to place it in split screen mode.
Samsung first showed off the feature during its latest Unpacked event. This suggests that the feature might be exclusive to select Samsung devices, at least for now. Currently, Gemini’s split screen support is only known to be available on the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
That said, it seems that Google is working on a similar feature for normal smartphones. In July, code analyst Assemble Debug managed to enable an early version of Gemini’s split screen support for smartphones by tweaking some flags. Since then, no new information on the matter has emerged. Perhaps Google is saving it as one of the new features for the next Pixel Feature Drop update.
