Jerusalem:
The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it had killed a senior Hezbollah official in an airstrike on a Beirut suburb the day before, while continuing to attack the Lebanese armed group.
The army said that Nabil Qaouq, a member of Hezbollah’s Central Council, was “killed and eliminated” on Saturday, just one day after the group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in a similar attack.
A source close to Hezbollah confirmed to AFP that Qawuq was killed in Saturday's attack and identified him as a member of Hezbollah's Central Council, which is responsible for securing the group.
The army said in a statement: “Qaouk was considered close to two senior Hezbollah leaders and directly involved in terrorist attacks against the State of Israel and its citizens, even in recent days.”
Hezbollah's entry in the 1980s was “considered an important source of knowledge in its region,” according to the army.
In recent weeks, Israel has launched large-scale attacks against senior Hezbollah leaders and seized the group's weapons in eastern Lebanon and its strongholds in Beirut.
On the sixth day, the group's leader, Nasrallah, was attacked, sending shock waves throughout the Middle East.
