Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said the backed group would leave on Saturday, confirming his death after the Israeli military announced it had been eliminated in an airstrike in Beirut the day before.
His death represents a devastating blow to Hezbollah, which is suffering from an increasing campaign of Israeli attacks. It is also a major blow to Iran, given the important role it plays in the regional “resistance force” that Tirao supports.
Hezbollah issued a statement in which it affirmed the continuation of its battle against Israel “in support of Gaza and Palestine and in defense of Lebanon and its steadfast and honest people.” I did not know that Nasrallah had died.
The Israeli army had previously said that Nasrallah was eliminated in a “targeted attack” on the sixth day of the group’s underground headquarters in a residential building in the southern suburb of Beirut, which is controlled by Hezbollah.
He was said to have been killed along with another senior Hezbollah leader, Ali Karki, and other leaders.
He added, “The attack was carried out while Hezbollah’s senior leadership was operating from its headquarters and promoting terrorist activities against the cities of the State of Israel.”
