In the fourth show, Ryan Murphy, John Robin Baetz, and Joe Paquin asked the audience to investigate the horrific incident through their FX horror series, “Grotesquerie.” Shifting gears towards the more fun side of humanity, the same series creators premiere a new medical drama the next night “Dotor's Odyssey.” Starring Joshua Jackson as Dr. Max Bankman, a Yale-trained doctor tasked with handling medical emergencies aboard the luxury liner Cruzeiro.
In the first few minutes of the series premiere, Dr. Bankman is shown getting dressed for his first day of work to the tune of Smokey Robinson's “Cruisin'.” Getting a new job is often a scary task, but this doctor likes to wear Havana shirts and you know he's cool. Post-Covid, he is entering the next phase of his life by embarking on the Odyssey, a beautifully designed and cultured cruise, recently married and staying on vacation.
The medical team may be small, but it is certainly powerful, since its new medical offices are located in a major hospital with few restrictions. He plays nurse/apparent love interest Avery (Philippa Soo), who works for nurse Tristan (Sean Teale), a competitive and selfish young man whose heart is with Avery. The three report to Captain Robert Macy (Don Johnson), a gentleman who asks his team to integrate the role of guardians of the guests they stay with.
Bankman moves easily from a land doctor to two other professional doctors who have already sailed the high seas. Initially, some emergencies may require careful attention and skill, including a guest eating too much food, causing iodine poisoning. Doctor Odyssey is pitched as a typical procedural medical drama, but when it comes to executive producer and co-creator Murphy, none of his series can be described as typical. Jackson ditches some of the more sinister fathers on his resume built in recent years (“Dr. Morty,” “Fatal Atraço”) and enters this new era of the Doctor. Charming, likeable and quick as Dr. Bankman, Jackson asks the audience to accompany you on your work-life balance journey at sea.

The chemistry between Jackson and Sue goes back to the heart of this immersive series, as they become familiar over drinks on exotic beaches. Our characters live in a rollercoaster circus, a small moment of intimacy, or a doctor sharing with his nurse some traumatic experience that gives depth to an adventure-seeking home as he shows off his dance steps. There are moments in the series when the drama picks up steam, especially when someone says the eerie words “home of the sea” while sailing in light water.
There are inevitable comparisons between “Doctor Odyssey” and “The Love Boat,” like every episode He promises a new group of guests And new medical problems that Jackson's character must solve. This shows us an underutilized Rachel Dratch, but the series promises more cameos like Shania Twain, John Stamos, Kelsea Ballerini and frequent Murphy collaborators Cord Overstreet and Cheyenne Jackson in special roles in the future.
“The body is a miraculous healing machine,” Dr. Bankman notes to Avery, mindful of the many situations he encounters in his esteemed medical career.
