Wojciech Szczesny has insisted it would be “disrespectful” if he chose to stay put and not join Barcelona.
The Spanish club were forced to make an emergency signing after goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a torn knee during Sunday's La Liga win over Villarreal.
Ter Stegen has undergone surgery and will have to miss a large part of Barcelona's season.
Chesney announced his decision to settle down in August. However, the 34-year-old must travel to Barcelona for the fifth exhibition to undergo medical tests before signing a short-term contract.
In statements to the Spanish newspaper Sport, Szczesny explained the reason for his approach to leaving the reform that he abandoned.
“I have great respect for Barcelona's history, it's one of the best clubs in the world,” Szczesny said.
“I understand the difficult situation that has arisen for them after Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury, and it would be disrespectful on my part not to consider this option,” he added.
After a 1-0 win over Getafe in the fourth quarter, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was questioned about Szczesny's goal.
“I only miss two players,” Flick said.
“Iñaki (Pena) is our first-choice goalkeeper and we are very happy with him. He is everything we can do.
“Iñaki is 25 years old, but the other targets are still very young. We need more experience and that's why we are faking this. We have already spoken and discussed this, we have to decide.
