To celebrate the company’s 11th anniversary, Erica Synths has put a limited version of one of its drum machines back into production – with some very special wood side panels. Yes, I’m talking about the Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 Black Limited Edition. And yes, it’s extremely limited. Only 35 units available!
Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 Black Limited Edition: Custom Wood Panels
Erica Synths makes a lot of incredible products but the one that I most covet is the Perkons HD-01. To complement the original blue design, the company released a limited black edition earlier this year. Now it’s back (in black) (again) but this time with some very unique wooden side panels.
“The side panels are made from a selection of woods, handpicked by our artisan craftsman,” says the Erica Synths website. “Cherry, walnut, ash, teak, sapele, maple and padouk are featured in various combinations creating a unique infusion of character for each pair of panels with a premium lacquer finish to bring out the characteristic grain of each wood.”

They do look good but the lightning-like pattern is especially striking (see what I did there?). This was done with the Lichtenburg method, which “involves applying high-voltage electricity to the surface of the wood, resulting in patterns reminiscent of lightning strikes.”
If this sounds dangerous, it is! “The method has gained notoriety due to numerous incidents of death and severe injury when people have attempted it at home,” explains Erica Synths, “with at least 33 people having died between 2017 and 2022.”
Craftsman Sandis Vāgners hand-made the panels for the Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 Black Limited Edition “in the deep woods of Latvia.” To make sure that he didn’t die in the process, the company developed a special emergency power cut circuit.
I know Erica Synths is associated with techno but this is the most metal thing I have ever heard.
