With Neptunes, Goddard wants to pay homage to the influential production partnership of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, who share the same name. However, Smith says the title has a more cosmic inspiration. “I loved the beat when I first heard it,” he said in print. “I actually thought he was exploring Nettuno as a planet and the qualities that I felt he had. “So, I’m on the side of hard stuff but I have spatial themes as a result.”
