The makers of the unique Duo groovebox are back with the Dato Drum, a fun-looking drum machine for “humans of all ages.”
Dato Drum
You might remember Dato. The company makes Duo, a unique, kid-friendly groovebox that’s designed for two people to use at the same time. We liked it so much, we named it one of the best synths for kids. Now the Dutch company is back with the Drum, another cute and funky instrument that looks to be just as all-ages friendly as its Duo sibling.
A Friendly Circular Drum Machine
Now on Kickstarter, Dato is billing the Drum as a “friendly circular drum machine.” With its green body and big, colorful buttons, it’s certainly friendly-looking although I’d describe the shape as more octagonal than circular.
Unlike most drum machines, however, Drum doesn’t adhere to a single orientation, with its controls arranged around the top in a circle. Oh wait, I get it now! And, as with the Duo, it appears to be aimed at collaborative play.
Four Voices and 8 Steps
Dato Drum is a four-voice drum machine. Being sample-based, you can change the pitch of the voices. Additionally, you can change out the samples via a web-based tool.
The sequencer has eight steps, with each voice getting its own sequencer lane of colorful lights that move around the face in a circular motion – easy for kids to follow and understand.
The drum pads are pressure sensitive and there’s a built-in speaker, USB power, MIDI and sync.
Drum Fun for All Ages
If the Dato Drum looks simple, that was by design.
“Dato Drum is a playful drum machine that is aimed at children and adults alike. Its round shape invites collaboration, and its simple hands-on interface makes sure everyone can play along.”
Dato says that both musicians and non-musicians of all ages were involved in the design process and the Drum has a focused selection of features that invite hands-on interaction.
Price and Availability
The Kickstarter campaign (link below) for Dato Drum is now underway and is scheduled to finish on October 20. Pre-orders for the drum machine can be placed at €339 (around $379) for delivery in September 2025.
