Breakshaper is an all-in-one multi-effects plugin that’ll get your drums smacking in no time! This week’s round-up of freebies also features FeenstaubTX, a great new exciter from Variety of Sound, and Dimension by Tribe Instruments.
Blanketfort Audio Breakshaper: Fat & Crunchy Drums
Australian developer Blanketfort Audio has released Breakshaper, a multi-effect specially designed for drums. It includes everything you need to create crunchy, smacking drum tracks and quickly shape the sound of your drums without setting up a complex effects chain.
First is the tone shaping section, which consists of a resonant multi-mode filter and a simple tilt/smile tone control. The filter can also be modulated by an LFO.
The signal then hits the distortion stage, where you can apply subtle saturation or full-on distortion using the Dirt and Harmonics controls. And finally, there’s a dynamics section with a one-knob compressor (Smash) and a transient shaper.
Breakshaper is available for macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU formats.
Variety of Sound FeenstaubTX: It’s a Kind of Magic
After releasing updates for some of its older plugins, Variety of Sound is back with a brand-new freebie. FeenstaubTX is an exciter and expander designed for processing complete stereo mixes. The developer says that it’s great for creating “musical consistency” and balancing the timbre, dynamics, and stereo field of the mix. “Feenstaub” means “fairy dust” in German, so think of it as a little sprinkle of magic for your mix.
FeenstaubTX works in mid/side mode, letting you apply saturation and expansion to the middle and sides of your mix independently. The saturator is based on the transients of the audio signal and offers a choice of tube, solid-state, and transformer characteristics.
FeenstaubTX is a VST/VST3 plugin for Windows.
Tribe Instruments Dimension
Dimension by Tribe Instruments is a free chorus and pseudo stereo effect that’s great for adding dimension and width to mono signals. Simply dial in the desired amount of “wash” and adjust the stereo width control to your liking. There’s also a high-pass filter for preventing low-frequency phase issues, as well as a goniometer for monitoring the amount of effect. Simple and useful!
Dimension Chorus is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
