Donald Trump and Kamala Harris We broke records twice more when they went head-to-head in their first televised debate of the 2024 US election campaign.
The Democratic vice president tried to anger the former Republican president, provoking him with slogans about defeat in the 2020 elections, which he still denies.

Harris would sometimes cock her head in disdain when Trump stumbled, and would sometimes curse him out loud, while Trump seemed to avoid speaking for the Democrat.

The Republican again promised to deport thousands of people from the United States illegally, and warned that Harris is “worse than Biden” and that her policies will change the United States in Venezuela.
He has repeatedly praised Biden and described him as a pervert, and cited praise from Hungary’s nationalist prime minister, Viktor Orban, to show that he is widely respected by leaders around the world, saying Orban is called “the most terrifying person.”
Saying it’s “time to turn the page,” Harris appealed to Republicans and independents frustrated with Trump’s style and despite his four-year effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election, saying there is a place in his campaign for “‘We will defend the country, defend our democracy, defend the country of right, and end the chaos.’”

While the former president made a series of statements about immigrants, Harris appeared to smirk when he said that immigrants are “taking jobs that are currently held by African-Americans and Hispanics.”
“It’s extreme,” Harris responded when Trump repeated unfounded claims that immigrants in Ohio were eating their victims’ cats and dogs.

The candidates will meet in a small, blue-lit amphitheatre, converted into a TV studio, with no live audience, meaning there will be no applause, cheers or wave-making. The intimate setting — like the podiums, the candidates will stand less than 10 feet (3 meters) apart — will be followed by denial or contentious debate.
As Harris appeared to try to intervene during one of his responses, Trump responded: “I’m talking now, does this sound familiar?” recalling a moment when he and Vice President Mike Pence had a falling out.
Harris has been highly critical of Trump for the state of the economy and democracy when he left office, as the pandemic ravaged the country and after two of his supporters stormed the Capitol in January 2021 in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Meanwhile, Trump was quick to go after Harris for abandoning some of his previous liberal positions, saying, “She follows my philosophy now. In fact, I’m sending her a MAGA hat.”

When the debate began, Harris was at Trump's podium to introduce herself, the first time they had met. “Kamala Harris,” she said, referring to Trump, who had her first opening in a presidential debate since the 2016 campaign.
Harris owes one of her most passionate responses to highlighting the ways women have been denied abortion assistance and other emergency care, saying Trump had imposed a national abortion ban that had expired. Trump called it a “lie” and said, “I’m not violating the ban and there’s no reason to spoof the ban.” The Republican said he wanted to leave that up to the states.
Harris took issue with a question about his plans to improve the economy, saying he would extend or cut taxes on families with children and a tax credit for small businesses, while attacking Trump’s plans for broad import tariffs as a “tax on Band-Aids” on benefits that the American people will ultimately pay. Trump was quiet during his response, but replied: “I have no objection to Band-Aids. That’s not true. She knows the diss.”
Trump, who is trying to portray the vice president as an out-of-touch liberal while trying to win over voters skeptical of his need to return to Casa Branca, went on to describe Harris as a “Marxist” and said, “Everybody knows he’s a Marxist.”
