The original Mooer Ocean Machine took two years of hard work to develop for Devin Townsend. Almost seven years later, the newly improved Mooer Ocean Machine II was launched.

Ocean Machine II

The Mooer Ocean Machine II is a powerful and versatile multi-effects pedal that combines delay, reverb, and looper functions into one compact unit. With its impressive range of effects and improved features, this update could be what will make you want one.

It is a fantastic pedal for playing with time, layers, and repeats.

Updates

It now has a new silver look with coloured knobs which easily denote what you are working with. I own the first version, and it can get a little confusing as that one is all blue with black control knobs, which is hard to see on a darkened stage.

They have also upgraded it to 120 seconds of recording time in the integrated looper instead of the original’s 44 seconds. That could be handy and make it even more fun to layer up sounds. It still has 15 Delay and 9 Reverb Types, and these are where the new coloured knobs should help to navigate all the parameters.

Enhanced Routing & Connectivity

Parallel or Series routing is also available, and it now offers True Bypass or DSP Bypass. Thankfully, Mooer has also added a USB-C on the rear of the pedal for updates and MIDI syncing.

MIDI has also been updated, so it now clocks better with external signals.

  • 15 Delay and 9 Reverb Types: Explore various effects, including hall, plate, spring, shimmer, and more.
  • Dual Delay: Creates complex and layered delay sounds with two independent delay lines.
  • 120 Seconds of Loop Time: Capture and loop your performances
  • Parallel or Series Routing: Customise your signal chain by routing effects in parallel or series.
  • USB-C Connectivity: Connect to your computer for MIDI synchronization and firmware updates.
  • True Bypass or DSP Bypass: Choose between preserving your signal’s integrity or adding a buffered bypass.

It also looks like they have included a power supply with the new version, as the original blue units did not come with one, and it needed at least 500mA.

Is it for you?

I like my original Ocean Machine, which does some fantastic things. It can be a little confusing when you first start to use it. This update adds some useful features, and they have slightly enhanced the layout and made it visually more straightforward to navigate.

If you want something to add some ethereal spice to your guitar, synth, or studio work, then the Ocean Machine II is probably for you. Anyone who has listened to Devin Townsend will understand what to expect from this set of effects.
