The Google TV Streamer arrived as the next-gen product in the “Chromecast” series. However, it is also a direct replacement, as the Mountain View giant confirmed the discontinuation of the Chromecast brand. The company’s first set-top box will be available to buy in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, Google is increasing its prominence by “hiding” Chromecast dongles on its website. Recently, the company confirmed that the Chromecast lineup will get Android TV 14.
Following the Google TV Streamer announcement, Google confirmed that it will stop producing the current Chromecast with Google TV lineup. While supplies last, the company will continue to sell the devices on the Google Store. However, following a recent change, it is now harder to find them there. Currently, the “Streaming” section within “Smart Home” redirects to the company’s latest product.
Google hides Chromecast in its official store
In the Google Store, each category not only shows the most recent product but all models from previous generations that are still on sale. For example, under “Thermostats,” you’ll find not only the new Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen), but also the more affordable Nest Thermostat and related accessories, such as the temperature sensor, trim kit, and power connector.
However, in an apparent attempt to give more prominence to the Google TV Streamer, Google has hidden the Chromecast with Google TV. There is no trace of any of the company’s dongles on the main “Streaming” page. This gives the impression that the only streaming device Google currently sells is the new set-top box. However, Google has not completely removed Chromecast devices from its online store.
To find it, now you need to scroll down under “Smart Home” until you reach an “Entertainment” section. That said, it’s possible that the presence of the Chromecast is an oversight. At any time, the company could remove it entirely. Still, if you’re interested in purchasing a Chromecast with Google TV from the official store, you can still get a shortcut to it from Google’s search results. You just need to type “buy chromecast” or something similar in the search box.
