Update needed: Greer (Nicole Kidman) has planned an extravagant wedding for her son Benji (Billy Howle) and her friend Amelia (Eve Hewson), which she finds out about when Amelia's best friend, Merritt (Megan Fahy), is found dead. With Merritt carrying an unborn child for Greer's husband, Tugg (Liev Schreiber), several family members may have had a reason to kill her. But, finally, the killer is revealed to be Abby (Dakota Fanning), Thomas' wife.
Finally, he also revealed what Greer had known for decades: that she had actually worked as an escort and that Taj was one of his clients. “We actually saw a dinner that was intentionally ‘hot and frothy and fun,’” model Gina Lamia told TheWrap.
“I hope the viewers learn how to help as it goes along, because the goal is to have a really fun race,” Lamia said. “Elin Hilderbrand’s books — I always tell her — are cheaper than flying, but they’re just as effective…. There’s a foam element and it’s not very intentional.
Below, Lamia reveals a deadly revelation at the end, such as the changes in Hilderbrand's book and how “Legally Loira” inspired Greer's “outrageous” confession.
In the book, Merritt's death was accidental, with Abby trying to drug Isabel's character so she could end up as a husband. Why did you want to resort to premeditated death to adapt it for TV?
I love the ending of the book, but during the development process, we and the producers realized that it would be more satisfying on a TV show to have the murder be premeditated and targeted. In the book, Abby puts drugs in a drink, but she meant it for a character made up of Isabel, and it was a coincidence that Merritt had drunk, and it was even more coincidental that Merritt ended up swimming after drinking here. I wanted to pay homage to those parts of the book, but also give public notice of my suffering from a premeditated murder committed by someone who really intended to kill the victim.
Are you thinking of a different murder from the book?
Don't think about another murder. And when we climbed Dakota, I was happy, because it was unbelievable. She's so graceful and so precise, and because the Easter eggs that we planted with her are planted, I give in enough in the series… so I don't know that you're thinking about the ending.
What is Abby's motive for killing Merritt?
Money Reason – Abby is pregnant and wants to get into The Beresford, a high-rise building in New York, and she's worried about a few things. She didn't marry Thomas partly because of his wealth. If Merritt raises this child until birth, it will be another Winbury, and the three children won't have access to the joint trust until Winbury turns 18 again.
If Merritt survives and has this child, she'll have to wait another 18 years for the money, and she's not willing to do that. I hope it's clear that the show will talk about it with Thomas, and she'll be encouraged to care for him, and then, when she realizes he's flat, she'll have to solve the problem herself.
In our books, Greer finds out what's going on, but the family continues as normal. Why did you want the police to bring justice to Abby?
I really want the audience to be satisfied. That always puts me in the shoes of the person who's on the show, and if justice isn't served, I certainly hope there's a second season that's about justice. You can't do that to the audience unless you're satisfied in some other way, or Abby Tier could be an illegal punishment, but I really didn't want to run Dakota Fanning over in the road.
I also wanted to thank the police, because these characters are so smart and fun to watch play off of each other, and their relationship develops over the course of a long series into a really strong alliance. It was important to give them the win, mainly because they are home to each other on the show, except for Amelia. We also need to establish that Amelia is in prison.
The final impact is this big reveal from Jarir that she was actually a companion and knew Tag as a client. Where did you see that idea?
The history of this box wasn't in the book and we didn't always have it, but I knew I wanted it to have a secret that wouldn't let him give any information to the police. No, actually, it was inspired by two of my favorite movies, Legally Loire, which isn't exactly the same thing, but there's a character who doesn't want to be given any credit… and that's why. She was getting liposuction. When should I give a gynecology class?
Thoughts: A little bit from the best. Actually, it all started when Greer realized that he had stolen his first romance novel, and then, through conversations with the actors and various snippets of routine, it was clear that he was motivating and keeping Taj, from the way Taj felt. Because he had this secret power over her, he could be a little bit more sensual. These two actors also have really good chemistry… I realized, wouldn't it be fun if you had some kind of sexual story in common? These guys are daters and they're members of the country club.
Why did you want me to film a less dramatic moment?
I was very nervous about that big reveal, because there aren't many actors and directors together who get to use that Tom, because it's incredibly risky. You don't want the golgar or the pastado de la — I definitely don't want that. So, I didn't want it to be like, “I have a dark secret, if it's revealed, it's going to be judged by the diretto” — I wanted it to be a moment where Greer takes power, or a moment where it's achieved by Nicole and Susan together.
At dinner… We have a lot of comedy and I know that's why it works, because we don't ask the audience to sigh and hold their balls, we ask them to sigh and laugh and go to their friends and say: “I knew she was there hiding something! I could have done that. Why did Greer write his book about Amelia?
She probably sat down to write a book about the summer and Merritt's death and how it ruined her plans and how the rock waves affected her family and her island. Now that she thought about it, she began to realize that much of her anger and frustration and hardly any general emotion had been channeled into her feelings about her relationship with Amelia, what she had said about her and how she lived her life. Life.
You knew even before the show ended that she was ready to let herself go. Aku that writing the book started something new, and it was really about finding something authentic and leaving behind the need to look perfect at all times. It's true that she was really inspired by Amelia and Merritt's friendship, not that she's ever had a friend like that in her life, so I hope she finds one.
Have you talked about continuing the story in another season?
We had a lot of fun with the first season, and you never know what the future holds. There are a lot of factors that could come together, but you never know.
