HMD has launched the HMD Fusion as a new mid-range smartphone with a modular approach that makes things more fun. The company also revealed details about its current strategy to try to stand out in the market.
HMD Fusion opts for modular cases with exclusive functions
The HMD Fusion is not as modular as Google’s defunct Project Ara was intended to be. Instead, HMD is betting on interchangeable covers that add different functionalities. For example, there are cases with wireless charging or a ring light for content creators. There’s even a case with integrated gaming controllers, as well as a rugged one with an IP68 rating. The rear area of the HMD Fusion integrates pin connectors that enable the different functionalities of each case.
The device’s approach is similar to that of the CMF Phone 1, although this one focuses on detachable accessories rather than integrating them into the case. Indeed, the Fusion might have drawn direct inspiration from Motorola’s now-extinct Moto Mods. Additionally, HMD wants to empower the community’s creativity through the HMD Fusion Development Toolkit that lets you 3D print your own case designs.
A clear mid-range in terms of tech specs
Speaking purely of specs, the HMD Fusion is not among the most powerful phones on the market. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chip and 6GB/8GB of RAM power the device. The Fusion clearly sits in the affordable mid-range segment, although ironically it could be the most eye-catching phone in the brand’s catalog. The phone will be available in variants with 128GB/256GB of expandable storage.
The phone features a 6.56″ IPS LCD display with HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The set is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 33W wired charging. HMD is keeping its focus on the repairability seen on the Skyline, so the battery and other components of the new Fusion are easily replaceable. iFixit is set to provide parts for the device for the next 7 years, thereby extending its lifespan.
There’s a basic rear dual camera system commanded by a 108MP main sensor. The secondary 2MP sensor handles depth-sensing duties to improve portraits. However, the Fusion’s front camera stands out with a high 50MP resolution. As for software, the device runs Android 14 out of the box. HMD continues to lag behind other brands in terms of software support, guaranteeing only two big OS updates. There will also be three years of security patch updates.
The HMD Fusion will be available in the United States sometime in Q4 2024 for $299. The device comes with a TPU Casual Outfit (valued at $24.99 USD) with no extra features. Other cases will be available later this year.
HMD’s strategy to grow in the smartphone market
According to the company, it’s very focused on products that offer useful features at an affordable cost. Plus, it’s addressing issues like e-waste and digital overload. The repairable approach of the latest HMD devices is in line with the company’s current vision. HMD claims that keeping its goals clear has allowed it to achieve significant improvement in operational profitability YoY in 2023.
HMD aspires to integrate into the mainstream, a challenging endeavor. However, it is looking for key partners that will help it achieve its goal. For example, HMD is the new sponsor of FC Barcelona, one of the most popular football teams worldwide. They also collaborated with Mattel to launch a Barbie-themed feature phone. The latter is banking on nostalgia as a push towards digital “detoxification.” Sometimes it’s beneficial to take some time away from social media, and these types of devices are ideal for that.
Lastly, there’s the Better Phone Project focused on developing an ideal phone for children. The project seeks to develop a device that guarantees the well-being of the little ones.
