AI teacher debuts in Europe, it was only a matter of time

David Game College in London has introduced a new educational program, the AI-Taught Class Sabrewing Program. The innovative initiative, launched in September 2024, marks the first instance in the UK where artificial intelligence (AI) takes center stage as the primary instructor in a classroom setting. The program plans to revolutionize the learning experience for students by leveraging advanced AI technology and virtual reality (VR) to deliver personalized education.

AI-Gaught Class Sabrewing Program begins

The AI-Taught Class Sabrewing Program has been designed to adapt to the unique learning needs of each student. Twenty GCSE students at David Game College are the first to experience this AI-driven approach. The AI system, named after the agile and swift Sabrewing hummingbird, assesses the strengths and weaknesses of each student. It then tailors the lesson plans to focus on areas that need improvement, ensuring a more effective learning process.

The program is not entirely devoid of human interaction. Three “learning coaches” are present in the classroom to monitor the students, provide support, and step in when the AI technology falls short, particularly in subjects like art and sex education. These coaches bridge the gap between traditional teaching methods and the new AI-driven approach.

Why AI is at the Helm

The decision to implement the AI Program at David Game College stems from a desire to explore the potential of AI in education. The college’s administration believes that AI can offer a more adaptive and personalized learning experience compared to traditional teaching methods.

The Program is part of a broader trend of integrating AI into education. The program has garnered attention from educational experts, including Rudolf Eliott Lockhart, Chief Executive of the Independent Schools Association, who described it as a potential “game-changer.” Lockhart emphasized that the program’s success hinges on combining AI technology with solid educational expertise.

It further showcases the growing interest in using AI to enhance higher education. Institutions like Arizona State University (ASU) have launched similar initiatives, using AI technology, including ChatGPT, to support various academic activities.

The program boldly experiments with the future of education. While promising, the program raises important questions about AI’s role in the classroom. Educators and parents express concerns about the potential impact on student’s social and emotional development due to the reduced presence of human teachers who traditionally serve as role models and mentors.

Despite these concerns, the administration at David Game College remains optimistic about the program’s potential. If successful, the AI-Taught Class Sabrewing Program could pave the way for similar initiatives in schools across the UK and beyond.
