The SSL GateVerb plug-in brings a new approach to non-linear reverb processing, allowing you to conjure up classic reverb sounds in seconds.
As we’ve come to expect from SSL, GateVerb’s interface is straightforward, encouraging you to shape your own sounds, rather than simply browsing through the patch library.
SSL GateVerb
Although GateVerb looks simple enough for beginners, all the necessary controls are available, to shape professional-sounding reverbs. The basics include size, time, and density controls as well as pre-delay that can be synced with your DAW tempo, along with the main reverb time and the gate’s hold time.
The tone of your reverb can be shaped with the colour control, while the specialized retro control introduces degradation by reducing the sample rate. As its name suggests, GateVerb has advanced gating and ducking features, allowing you to shape the reverb tail as it decays.
In addition, the gate can be triggered by an external sidechain signal and filtered to focus the action of the gate. Meanwhile, the gate’s attack and release settings can also be adjusted in GateVerb’s advanced control section.
There are input and output gain controls, which is useful and the mix lock feature makes it possible to quickly flip through presets while maintaining the same wet/dry percentage.
Overall, GateVerb promises to be an exciting and easy-to-use reverb solution, and SSL recommends combining it with the LMC plug-in for the ultimate 1980s reverb sound.
GateVerb is an incredibly powerful creative tool that can add clarity, punch or an extra degree of vibe to almost any mix. With its highly flexible set of controls and creative parameters, GateVerb can help users take control over how their reverbs morph and change over time. This can have a significant effect on the overall outcome of a mix.
