There a good number of reasons why you might need to perform a factory reset on your Google Pixel 9 (Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL or Pixel 9 Pro Fold) smartphone. The most common reasons are because you’re planning to sell, trade in, or give it away to someone. But another common reason is if you are having some strange issues with your phone. Before we start, ensure you have backed up all of your data. A factory reset will clear everything off of your phone, essentially restoring it to its factory state. You can back up your data with Google One or simply back up your photos and videos to Google Photos and redownload your apps later.
Now that you’ve backed up your data, the next thing to do is to remove your Google account. Now, this is only needed if you are planning on getting rid of your Google Pixel 9 (that is, trading it in, selling it, or giving it to another person. If you are going to be signing back in after the factory reset, then this is not mandatory. Essentially, if you don’t remove your Google Account, your phone will use Factory Reset Protection to keep others from logging in. This is very useful if your device gets stolen.
Now, you’re ready to factory reset your device.
- Open the Settings app.
- Next, scroll down to the bottom and tap on System.
- Now, scroll down and tap on Reset Options.
- From here, you’ll see a few options, which you can try if you are troubleshooting some issues on your phone. Otherwise, tap on “Erase all data (factory reset)“.
- Then tap on “Erase all data” in the lower right corner of your screen. This screen shows you all of the accounts you are signed into, which will be removed.
- If you have a lock screen password, PIN, or pattern, you’ll be asked to enter it now. This is to ensure you are asking to factory reset your device.
- Now tap on “Erase all data” again.
- Your phone will now reboot and start to erase all of your data. In just a few minutes, it will reboot, just like it was on the day you bought the device.
