One person is dead and two others are still missing a day after an ice cave was discovered in southeast Iceland while a tour group was visiting the area, police said on Monday.
A group of 25 people of “different nationalities” were on a trail organised by the Predamerkurjokul Gelera organisation with a guide when the cave appeared, they told police in a statement.
Police said four people were caught on the ice and two holes were found.
Southland Police said on Sunday that the two people who were recovered had serious injuries, but added in a later statement in the second round that one of them was “declared dead non-locally”.
Another person was taken by helicopter to hospital in a “vertical” condition.
Rescue services will begin the search for the missing on Sunday and will continue searching the second gallery.
“A large number of rescue teams and lifeguards will be involved in the operation,” police said, adding that conditions were “difficult.”
Authorities decided to temporarily suspend the search on Sunday evening, when darkness fell and the building was no longer safe.
