Bayern Munich Defenders Matthijs de Ligt Noussair Mazraoui will travel to the United Kingdom for a second holiday to put the finishing touches on his move there. Manchester United In front of the new First League season.
United agreed an initial €45m (£38.5m) fee with Bayern for De Ligt, which included more than €5m (£4.2m) in add-ons.
De Ligt will also be accompanied by a second Bayern Munich player at Old Trafford, so the €20m (£17.1m) deal for Mazraoui was also wise.
Both De Ligt and Mazraoui were spotted at Munich airport in the second half of the week, before departing for Manchester, with De Ligt telling Sky Germany's Ben Heckner: “Nossair is waiting for me.”
De Ligt and Mazraoui should be registered in time for United's Premier League clash with Fulham, in what is their sixth match.
Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand feels it is a “big ask” for De Ligt to make an impact at United, given his injury-plagued history at Bayern Munich.
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand said: “He's had a lot of injuries, he hasn't started a lot of games in every one or three years, Man United are spending £45-50m like that.”
Will he join Manchester United and make a difference? Now that it's a big deal for him all eyes will be on him.
“It's a big pressure, a great opportunity for him, but there's a lot of uncertainty about this contract because of the previous seasons he had with two big clubs which weren't as good as we expected.”
Ferdinand's former United teammate Paul Scholes also criticised the decision to sign De Ligt.
“Like Manchester United, we miss players who can’t come in all the time. He (De Ligt) doesn’t play for Bayern, so that has to be a big worry, especially when Eric Dier plays in front of him. That’s a big worry for me,” Scholes told The Overlap.
“When you bring in players for £40m, £50m is only because they play for two or three years. Juventus were free, they weren’t good enough and obviously they weren’t good enough for Bayern Munich.
“He looks at us as a second-rate defender.”
