ByteDance has expanded its software offerings that can generate videos based on text instructions, joining a growing number of Chinese tech companies entering an emerging market also powered by the creators of ChatGPT and OpenAI.
Since Microsoft-backed OpenAI recently unveiled its Sora video text model, which is still not open for public use, Chinese companies have quickly developed similar tools, with several release models available to users.
Jimeng AI, developed by ByteDance-owned Faceu Technology, is now available on Apple's App Store for Chinese users, and will be verified by Reuters on the third day, after its launch on Android on July 31.
The launch of a text-based video model by the short-video app TikTok's controller follows a series of similar model launches in recent months in China.
Kuaishou, one of China’s largest video apps, opened its Kling AI video text model to the global public last year. Its beta version is accessible worldwide, and only requires an email address to sign up.
Chinese AI startup Zhipu AI also introduced its video management model Ying last week, and days after its launch, another startup, Shengshu, officially launched its Vidu app.
Faceu Technology is part of ByteDance's Jianying business, which is known for the video editing app CapCut.
Jimeng AI charges 69 yuan ($9.65) per month, 79 yuan for one month, or 659 yuan per year. Each drone allows users to create about 2,050 AI-powered images or 168 videos per month.
