France, the host of the 2024 Paris Olympics, is among the countries that won the gold medal on the opening day of the Games.
Here's a rundown of some of Saturday's medal winners:
Dupont, the hero of France's emphatic gold medal win in rugby
France won their first gold medal at the Paris Olympics, and their first in any form of men's rugby sevens, when Antoine Dupont claimed a stunning 28-7 win over two-time champions Fiji on a memorable night at the Stade de France.
Fiji have won all 17 of their previous games at the Olympics, topped by Josefa Talakolo.
But the home turmoil exploded when Ryan Rebaj, who scored twice in the semi-final win over Africa do Sul, crossed the line to level or score in the second half.
Superstar scrumhalf Dupont came off the bench to set up Aaron Grandidier Nkanang, who ran in to make it 21-7.
The crowd of 67,000 could not contain themselves as France dominated possession in the closing minutes and nearly exploded when Dupont fell on the final play of the match to make the final score 28-7.
The Fijians will be content with Prata, while in the previous bronze medal match, Africa do Sul defeated Australia 26 to 19 in the final game of a thrilling third-place play-off.
American Perry Baker also won the headline, becoming the greatest ever player in Olympic rugby sevens with his 10th try in the USA's 17-14 defeat to Ireland in the 8-5 qualifying match.
Evenepoel, Brown win gold medals in road cycling
On the winding streets of Paris, Belgium's Remco Evenepoel won gold in the men's individual time trial, while Australia's Grace Brown triumphed in the women's event.
Evenepoel won Olympic gold with his world title, as the 24-year-old clocked 36 minutes 12.16 seconds over 32.4 kilometres (20.1 miles) in heavy rain to beat Italy's Filippo Ganna by 14.92 seconds.
Evenepoel's compatriot, Wout van Aert, took third place.
In the women's road cycling race, Brown won Australia's first gold medal at this year's Olympics by destroying the field, with her strength and bike-handling skills unmatched by her rivals throughout the competition.
Australian wins the tournament Ponte Alexandre III In 1 minute 31.59 seconds, Britain's Anna Henderson won the prize. Many pilots race and fall in curves and parallels, with world champion Chloe Dygert taking the bronze medal.
Two medals for France as a non-Jew
Japan's Natsumi Tsunoda won the gold medal in the women's 48-kilogram (105.8-pound) category.
Three-time champion Tsunoda beat current world champion Basankhu Bavodorj of Mongolia to gold. Shirin Boukli, France's first medalist at the home games, shared bronze with Sweden's Tara Babolf.
Yldos Smetov, of Casaquistau, was the champion in the men's 60 kg (132.2 lb) event.
In Casaquistau, Smetov won his first gold medal in Paris, as did Frenchman Luka Mkhidze. The bronze medals went to Japan's Nagayama Ryugu and Spain's Francisco Garrigues.
