The MOTELX AV LAB, in collaboration with Liquid Sky Artist Collective, will take place on September 6 and 7 at the Beato Innovation District in Lisbon. This unique event, part of the renowned MOTELX Horror Film Festival, will bring together filmmakers, VJs, video artists, experimental musicians and gear nerds from across Europe. With workshops, screenings and live performances, AV LAB promises an immersive experience for all participants. Whether you’re looking to network, see new and unreleased audio hardware, learn new skills or simply enjoy cutting-edge audiovisual art, this is an event not to be missed.

MOTELX AV LAB: Interactive Workshops and Audiovisual Performances

The MOTELX AV LAB event will take place on the 6th and 7th of September 2024 in the Beato Innovation District in Lisbon, in collaboration with the Liquid Sky Artist Collective. The event starts at 12:00 and ends at 24:00 each day. Access to most activities is free, but there is a charge for the DIY workshops and the MOTELX warm-up party. This event is supported by the Cultural Department of the City of Lisbon and Thomann.de.

The MOTELX AV LAB will take place in the heart of Lisbon and will offer a variety of activities and workshops. MOTELX (website), one of the best horror film festivals in Southern Europe, celebrates its 18th edition this year. Co-organiser is the Liquid Sky Artist Collective, which was founded in São Paulo in 1986 and since the early 1990s has organised multimedia AV jam sessions, video art performances, new school Dada and Surrealist exhibitions, as well as techno, drum & bass, ambient and experimental noise parties in cities such as New York, Cologne, Berlin, Paris, Zurich and Vienna.

A Gathering of Europe’s Top AV Artists

The MOTELX AV LAB will feature experimental film screenings, AI film screenings, modular synthesiser performances, audiovisual jam sessions, product demonstrations of new instruments and software such as the Unreal Engine, and networking opportunities. These activities will allow participants to meet like-minded people and initiate new audiovisual projects and films.

Admission to the main event of MOTELX AV LAB is free, but you can donate a tree to the Liquid Sky reforestation project in southern Portugal if you wish. There is a charge for the DIY workshops, as they include all the necessary electronic components. These include workshops by legendary Amsterdam noise and musique concrète instrument designers ‘Error Instruments’, Portuguese Eurorack synthesiser makers ‘Cubu Synth’ and Lisbon video glitcher/TV hackers ‘Freedom Enterprise’. The club’s external event, the MOTELX Warm-up Party, will also be charged for. The exact location is yet to be announced.

Of particular note is the free Unreal Engine workshop by CDM legend Peter Kirn, who will introduce visitors to the world of UE as a modular synthesiser and VJ tool. Erica Synths from Riga will be presenting a new musique concrète / film music “wonder weapon”. Ninja Tune from England also have a surprise in store. We’re already very excited!

Where Tech Meets Art in Lisbon’s Vibrant Scene

The aim of MOTELX AV LAB is to bring together like-minded filmmakers, VJs, video artists, experimental and electronic musicians, multimedia artists and others to exchange creative ideas and create new projects. Students and artists from Portugal, Spain and France are expected to attend, which could be a good reason for you to spend a long weekend in beautiful Lisbon.
