Discord came to PS5 quite some time ago, but for most people it wasn’t possible to actually join a voice chat from the console itself (The features was available to some for testing). Instead, you had to first start the call from the Discord mobile or PC app, then transfer the call to your PS5 right afterward. This is the exact same method Discord employed for the Xbox version when it initially came to Xbox. However, it did eventually roll out joining calls from the console itself.
Now it’s finally the PS5’s turn. Well, almost. Discord isn’t rolling the feature out today but it will be doing so “very soon.” Being able to join a Discord voice chat from the PS5 console is going to make things way easier for players. There are tons of scenarios where this can simplify things. For example, say you play a game like Modern Warfare III on PS5 but your friends play on PC. If you’re all in a Discord server together, you will soon have less steps to go through to join the call for in-game comms.
Another scenario is with games like Destiny 2. Destiny 2 has an in-game party finder system now (finally), but there is still one issue that pops up constantly. Getting people to join your Discord channel for comms instead of using the in-game chat system. This is almost certainly because players don’t know how to set things up or transfer calls, or don’t want to go through the steps to do so. Joining from the console directly should be less of a hassle and get more players on PS5 to utilize Discord’s superior voice chat quality.
Joining a Discord voice chat call from the PS5 console is rolling out in the next few weeks
Discord has confirmed that you’ll be able to start joining calls from the PS5 in the next few weeks. This is going to be a gradual rollout. Starting with Japan and Asia, Discord will roll out this feature within the next few weeks. It’ll then move to Europe, New Zealand and Australia, the Middle East, and then the US and Canada. There’s no exact time for this feature to show up.
So you’ll have to check from time to time to see if it’s available. It should be pretty easy to keep tabs on the feature’s arrival though. You’ll need to be on the latest software version for PS5 to have access. So when you get the new system software update that has started to roll out, then you should be able to join Discord calls from the console itself.
You will need to link your Discord and PSN accounts
If you’ve used the Discord call transfer feature on PS5 already, then this step is already completed for you. For everyone else, you’ll need to make sure your Discord and PSN accounts are linked. Once you’ve done that, joining a Discord voice chat call is pretty simple. Open up the Control Center by hitting the PlayStation button. Then, scroll over to the Game Base option and find and select the Discord server you’re looking for. From there, find and select the voice channel you want to join.
Hit connect, and that’s it. You’ll be able to see who’s already in the channel as well. Additionally, if a user on Discord calls you, you’ll get a notification on PS5 and be able to join a call that way.
Profile Sharing rolls out next week
Back in May Sony announced it would be adding Profile Sharing in a future update, and that feature is about to hit players. It’ll be rolling out next week the company says. This will make it a lot simpler to share your profile with others. You’ll be able to create a QR Code link and share it across social media or in emails or text messages. You can alternatively create a sharable link instead of a QR code that people would need to scan if that’s easier.
