Aussie expat and former president of McCann’s Global Creative Community John Mescall has joined independent creative network by The Network as creative chair.

Mescall fills the role after the network’s founder and creative chair Per Pedersen passed away in 2023.

Mescall brings a wealth of experience in creative leadership and a record of success to the independent creative network. Once named ‘The Nicest Man in Advertising,’ the ex-McCann creative leader will work closely with CEO Jack Smail to act as a centrepoint for ideas and be involved in all network-wide creative decision-making, provide creative guidance to network members, work on projects and evaluate the creative potential of prospective members.  He will also collaborate to shape the network’s creative direction by overseeing the creative council meetings and initiatives.

With a career in the industry spanning over 30 years, Mescall has a relentless commitment to creativity and an unshakeable belief in its transformative power, enabling brands to connect with their audiences. He values the importance of nurturing creativity and fostering a culture where innovation thrives.

Says Mescall: “Often life is as simple as following the truth to wherever it takes you. What’s true about advertising is that the best agencies are run by creative people. And the best work happens when great talent gets to work directly with ambitious clients.

“This is exactly what excites and inspires me about by TheNetwork. Every agency is owned and led by creative people. Every client gets to work with those people. And the only thing any of us care about is creativity that’s as potent and powerful as we can make it. Why else are we here?”

Says Smail: “John is undoubtedly one of the most creative individuals I have ever met.  His exceptional talent and brilliant personality make him an outstanding person. It’s a great honour to name him our creative chair or head of product, as I like to think. John’s ability to curate and unlock world-class creative solutions is extraordinary, and having him as part of this out-of-the-ordinary network feels just right. We firmly believe the industry needs innovative solutions like by The Network that prioritise ideas, empower creatives and always focus on quality over quantity. Per’s vision of a new global network owned and run by creatives was a powerful one that continues to thrive and inspire.”

Mescall’s career spans many notable achievements, including his role as president of the McCann Global Creative Community. He has been instrumental in creating award-winning campaigns of global significance, such Fearless Girl, Dumb Ways to Die, Where to Settle and ThisAbles. Before his international roles, Mescall worked at a number of agencies in Australia, including a decade running his own independent agency, where he honed his craft and earned his stripes as a heavyweight award-winning creative.

Mescall has won many awards including Cannes Titanium, Grand Prix, Gold, Silver, Bronze, D&AD Black and Yellow. Plus more at One Show, Clios, Andys, LIA, Spikes and AdFest.
