Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra vs Huawei Pura 70 Ultra: Design

Both phones have a frame made out of metal, but different metal. The Galaxy S24 Ultra utilizes titanium, while the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra has a frame made out of aluminum. On the back of Samsung’s flagship, you’ll find glass (Gorilla Armor), while eco leather is placed on the back of the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra. You’ll also notice that Samsung’s device has sharp corners, while it’s the complete opposite on Huawei’s offering.

Both smartphones have a centered display camera hole at the top, and very thin bezels too. Both of them also offer uniform bezels, by the way. Physical buttons sit on the right-hand side of both devices, and they have similar placement. The power/lock key sits under the volume up and down buttons. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is definitely more curvy than the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Both phones have a flat display, but the one on Huawei’s phone is covered by quad-curved glass. Its back side is proportionally curved on all sides. Samsung has a subtle curve towards the sides, but it has mostly flat front and back sides. Its top and bottom sides are flat too.

They also have rather different camera setups on the back. Samsung’s handset has five individual circles in the top-left corner. Four of them are reserved for cameras. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra has a large camera island in the top-left corner. It has a rather unique look to it, and it’s easy to recognize. The two phones are almost identical in terms of height, but the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is considerably narrower despite the fact it has the same display size as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The two phones are almost identical in terms of thickness. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is slightly lighter.

Both of them offer IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. Huawei’s smartphone is also considerably grippier than the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Its eco-leather back is one of the main reasons why.

This handset has a screen-to-body ratio of around 88%.

Huawei’s handset features a 6.8-inch 2844 x 1260 LTPO OLED display. That panel is also flat, but it has a quad-curved glass on top of it. It can project up to 1 billion colors and supports HDR content. The screen refresh rate is adaptive, and it goes from 1 to 120Hz. The maximum display brightness on the phone is 2,500 nits. Kunlun Glass protects this display, while the screen-to-body ratio is at around 89%.

Both of these smartphones have outstanding displays. They’re vivid, have great viewing angles, and they’re more than sharp enough. No, you will not notice the sharpness difference here, at all. The blacks are also deep on both panels, and both panels get more than bright enough. The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s display has one advantage, though. The Gorilla Armor used on it does a fantastic job of fighting light reflections and glare, so it’s easier to use outdoors.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra vs Huawei Pura 70 Ultra: Performance

Samsung’s flagship is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor. It’s basically an overclocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Samsung also included 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM inside of the phone. In addition to that, you’ll also find UFS 4.0 flash storage here. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is fueled by the Kirin 9010 processor, while 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM is included on the inside. Huawei also used UFS 4.0 flash storage.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra has a lot more modern processor. It has a 4nm chip, vs a 7nm processor inside the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra. Huawei was forced to do this due to the US sanctions. Having said that, both smartphones perform great in day-to-day tasks. They fly through everything you throw at them. Multitasking is not a problem, they open apps really fast, do a great job with multimedia consumption, and so on. You would never realize that the two SoCs are so different in terms of sheer power.

Where you will realize that the Galaxy S24 Ultra has an edge is in the gaming department. It can handle truly demanding games better than the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra. The vast majority of games offer similar performance, though, only the truly demanding ones will show you the difference here. So if you’re not gaming, you’ll be just fine with the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra. Just note that Google services don’t come pre-installed, so you’ll get to use AppGallery, third-party app stores, app repositories, and GBox if you need Google apps.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra vs Huawei Pura 70 Ultra: Battery

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery on the inside. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra includes a 5,200mAh battery. Both smartphones do a great job in terms of battery life, but the Galaxy S24 Ultra did outperform the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra in our tests. It managed to hold a charge longer during similar use scenarios, and it also did a better job in our battery drain test too.

With that being said, the difference really wasn’t all that big. Both of these smartphones are more than capable of pushing over the 7-hour screen-on-time mark, which is more than needed for the vast majority of smartphone users. Each of us uses our phones in different ways, so you mileage will vary, of course. If you tend to play games and take a lot of pictures, you’ll manage to bring the battery down quickly. If you don’t really perform demanding tasks all that much, both phones will be able to go the distance.

In regards to charging, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra humbles the Galaxy S24 Ultra. It supports 100W wired, 80W wireless, 20W reverse wireless, and 18W reverse wired charging. The Galaxy S24 Ultra supports 45W wired, 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra charges a lot faster than Samsung’s phone, it’s not even close. That goes for both wired and wireless charging, and it can also charge other devices a lot faster. Do note that Huawei’s phone also comes with a charger in the box. That’s not something we can say for the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra vs Huawei Pura 70 Ultra: Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra features a 200-megapixel main camera, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (120-degree FoV). There’s also a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (3x optical zoom), and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto unit (5x optical zoom). The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, on the flip side, includes a 50-megapixel main camera (variable aperture, sensor-shift OIS), a 40-megapixel ultrawide unit, and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (3.5x optical zoom, telemacro).

Both of these smartphones are amongst the best camera smartphones out there. In our experience, however, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra takes the cake. It manages to provide images that are closer to real-life shots, and which look less processed. Sharpening is easier to spot on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, while the phone still tends to push the saturation a bit overboard… at times. We’re, of course, nitpicking, but that’s what you have to do when it comes to two camera systems that are on a top level.

Both do a very good job in HDR situations, but that’s where the Pura 70 Ultra managed to shine a bit more too. Both sets of ultrawide shooters are good, but we did notice more details on the Pura 70 Ultra. High-zoom shots are a tossup, it all depends on the shot. For macro, however, Huawei’s Pura 70 Ultra is the phone to go for. Video recording does seem to be better on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, though.

Audio

There is a set of stereo speakers on both of these smartphones. While both of them provide well-balanced sound, the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s setup has the edge. Why? Well, it’s noticeably louder, which did come in handy a number of times.

Neither phone has an audio jack, however. You can always take advantage of their Type-C ports, though, of course… for wired audio. If you prefer to go wireless, the Galaxy S24 Ultra offers Bluetooth 5.3, while the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra ships with Bluetooth 5.2.
