The Sonos Ace headphones instantly remind you of the popular AirPods Max and the Sony XM5, but what do they sound like? We find out.
This is the first headphone system from Sonos, the US tech manufacturer and it’s impressive. By bringing together minimalist design elements and Hi-Fi sonics, they have created a set of headphones that is inobtrusive and exciting at the same time.
What’s different about the Sonos Ace ANC headphones?
For starters, the Ace headphones use Bluetooth 5.4 and USB-C connectivity, allowing you to play back lossless 3D audio with active noise cancellation (ANC) and up to 30 hours of listening time. In addition, the new Sonos TrueCinema technology is supported and this replicates a home cinema.
The design uses 40mm specialized dynamic drivers, offering extended low-frequency range and ultra-low distortion levels. While the Ace headphones don’t actually have a 3.5 mm jack input, they do ship with a USB-C to minijack connector for wired operation.
Supported codecs include SBC and AAC, as well as aptX Lossless, and the Multipoint Bluetooth functionality permits monitoring from two devices simultaneously. In addition, Aurocast support will be added with a future firmware update.
The Ace headphones use an ANC system with eight microphones, with an aware mode that compares to most transparency features on ANC headphones. This allows listening, combined with the sound from the surrounding environment.
On the headphones themselves, there is a multifunction button, giving you access to all the basics. Furthermore, an accompanying app provides an EQ for a more customized listening experience.
The headphones are equipped with 3D audio and head tracking which is compatible with major digital platforms such as Tidal, Amazon Music Unlimited, and Apple Music. What’s more, the intuitive TrueCinema technology integrates the Ace headphones with compatible Sonos soundbars.
The system takes a reading of your surrounding environment and then makes adjustments to optimize playback across the connected devices. This exciting development will follow in the coming months, so keep up to date.
