The new Friedman Plex Head is a sonic replica of Dave Friedman’s favourite 68′ JMP Super Lead Plexi amp.

We first saw the new Friedman Plex being shown off at NAMM earlier this year, and now, finally, it is available to order.

68′ JMP Super Lead Plexi

Dave Friedman is a tube amp genius, especially in classic British modded high-gain amps of the Marshall persuasion. His take on the 68′ JMP Super Lead Plexi is a work of art and features nothing but high-end components throughout the design.

He has tweaked the design and modernised it with some handy updates. According to David, the Friedman Plex Head is a sonic replica of a 50-watt Marshall Plexi from 1968.

Tweaked to Perfection

The Friedman Plex Head has separate lead and normal channels with individual volume controls. An internal channel bridging in the style of the old Plexi amplifiers makes it possible to achieve the same sonic results as the classic bridging with jumper cables.

Variac

The Plex Head brings 50 W of power to the stage with a built-in “Variac” voltage converter. The classic tube assembly has 3 x 12AX7 preamplifier tubes and 2 x EL34 power amplifier tubes.

The control options range from Volume II and Volume I to Treble, Middle, Bass, Presence, and a Master Volume Controller (M.V.C.). Switches such as Ch 1 Bright and Ch 2 Bright allow additional adjustments through quick access.  The amp also boasts internal channel jumping functionality for players to experiment with.

On the back, the Friedman Plex Head shows speaker outputs with different impedances to support a variety of connection options. But a send/return effect path is sought in vain. It doesn’t exist true to vintage.

Dave Friedman’s Post-Phase Master Volume

Dave Friedman’s master volume control is a modern interpretation of the Plex Head’s vintage heritage. This unique post-phase master volume design guarantees that the character core and the amplifier’s sonic richness remain unchanged whether you want to unleash the amp’s full power or lower it for quieter environments.

Original ’68 amps had no Master Volume, so they got very loud!

MSRP- GBP 2890/EUR 3299. The Friedman Plex Head is now available at Thomann
