Bastl Instruments Pizza Crust is a “hard-hitting drum voice” for Eurorack built on the digital Pizza platform. With various oscillator configurations, a transient shaper, a fast envelope, and clipping, Pizza Crust serves up speaker-melting drum and percussion sounds.

What the best part of a pizza? The crust, of course! Two years on the heels of the Pizza oscillator module, Bastl Instruments follows up at Superbooth 24 with the (Pizza) Crust percussion module. The identical layout of the controls and jacks reveals that it’s built on the same hardware platform as the original Pizza and last year’s awesome Basil delay.
In contrast to those modules, however, Crust focuses on drum and percussion sounds. The Tone button offers a choice of four oscillator configurations: FM, FM2, Dual, and Ring Modulation. The oscillators track 1 V/Oct. and follow a pitch envelope. In addition to this, there’s a Noise section with a built-in lowpass filter and four modes (White Noise, Clap, Bit, Metallic). You can blend Tone and Noise using the Layer fader.
The 1-knob envelope is simple, but effective. In the center, the times are the shortest. Turn the knob clockwise, and the decay time increases. Turn it counter-clockwise, and you’ll get longer attack andrelease times, which is perfect for shakers and other sounds with slower transients.
The diagonal Timbre fader works like a transient shaper. Bottom left is more body, top right is more attack.
Furthermore, Crust offers a clipping section that acts as a soft clipper with bass boost or as a transient shaper with hard clipping.
Thanks to numerous CV inputs, modulation possibilities are plentiful. In addition to the permanently assigned controls and inputs, there’s a multi-functional CTRL knob and input that you can assign to various parameters.

Bastl Instruments Pizza Crust is available to order from the manufacturer for €333.75. Bastl says that the next batch will ship in June 2024.
