With SSL X-DynEQ, the renowned audio developer takes EQ processing in an exciting new direction for music production, mixing, and mastering.

Of course, dynamic equalization is nothing new at SSL, as the feature is used in existing hardware and software processors. However, the new X-DynEQ plug-in draws from the X-EQ 2 parametric EQ, creating a new platform for intelligent EQ processing.

Like X-EQ 2, X-DynEQ is a 24-band parametric EQ with a range of 20 EQ and filter types. Each of the 24 dynamic bands offers extensive compression parameters including automatic threshold, attack, and release functions.

More Information

With its somewhat familiar node-based interface and piano roll view active, you can dive right into precise sculpting without needing much know-how. For example, by compressing a particular note in a bassline, you can make it sound more cohesive without overcompressing.

Simply by placing a node at the note in question, you can now deal exclusively with its frequency range. What’s more, you have both internal and external sidechain paths, allowing you to trigger the compression externally, and focus its range precisely.

Want to compress an individual element, like the snare within a drum loop? No problem. Just boost the area around the snare hit to find its core range, then carve away accordingly and dial in your compression settings to smooth the effect.

In addition to its basic processing features, X-DynEQ can also be used in L/R, Mid-Side, and spatial processing workflows. This makes it a tool that can be used in mixing and mastering workflows, where a certain degree of precision is needed.

Overall, the X-DynEQ looks like an intuitive processor for creative or corrective use. However, is it ready to compete against the likes of the mighty FabFilter Pro-Q 3? Only time will tell.

The X-DynEQ is currently available from Thomann.
