Android 15 will allow you to force apps to go dark

According to a new report by Mishaal Rahman, published over at Android Authority, Android 15 will allow users to force apps to go dark. In other words, you’ll be able to force dark mode onto apps that don’t support it.

Android 15 will seemingly allow you to force apps to go dark aka use dark mode

A lot of people prefer dark mode these days, it would seem. Google introduce a support for a system-wide dark mode back with Android 10. Most apps that you have installed on your phone have the dark mode option these days.

However, not all of them do. This new feature, that is expected to drop with Android 15, will make sure those apps go dark to… if you choose it to be that way. This change was spotted in the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 build, which arrived in January.

Google did a good job hiding a new ‘make all apps dark’ toggle. It was hidden under Settings -> Accessibility -> Color and motion. This toggle wasn’t even visible at the time the update arrived, and it still isn’t.

This feature is different than ‘override force-dark’ option

At first, it seems very similar to the ‘override force-dark’ toggle available in Developer Options. It’s better, though. Mishaal Rahman realized it works in more apps than the ‘override force-dark’ option does, which is good to hear. The ‘override force-dark’ option failed us a number of times, so it will be interesting to test this new one.

The ‘override force-dark’ is intended for developer use either way. It’s intended as a “feature for developers to quickly implement a dark theme without explicitly setting a DayNight theme”. It obviously works differently than the ‘make all apps dark’ option.

The existing option also tends to mess up images in some instances, as it triggers color inversion. The new option doesn’t do that, the source confirms. The point is, it’s not the same, it’s better.

Here’s what happens when this option is triggered

Mishaal also provided a number of samples as to how this option works. In the gallery below, you’ll find a bunch of images showing apps that don’t offer dark mode by default but were forced to get one by this new option.

This feature could go live with Android 15 Beta 2, which is expected to arrive during Google I/O next month.
