The Beosystem 9000c is a new CD player from Bang & Olufsen. It’s a revamped version of the classic design from the 1990s. For 50,000 euros, it’s a great, not cheap addition to any living room. This audiophile tower comes with two floor-standing speakers. Didn’t we just learn that CDs are basically dead? Or is the small silver disk experiencing a renaissance similar to vinyl?

Beosystem 9000c brings back the classic CD sound

The Beosystem 9000c from Bang & Olufsen is a modernized version of the legendary Beosound 9000 CD player from 1996. This new edition is the second in the Danish company’s “Recreated Classics” series. The original CD player was a game-changer in the 1990s, with a tower-like vertical structure that could hold up to six CDs simultaneously. You could even create your own playlists from all six discs. Not the biggest thing by today’s standards, but back then, it was a revolution!

Despite a significant decline in CD sales – just 3 percent of the music industry’s total in 2022 – the format is making a comeback thanks to Gen Z’s love of physical media (just look at the surge in vinyl sales). Bang & Olufsen developed the Beosystem 9000c with this trend in mind, hoping the CD would also be “rediscovered.”

Luxury and quality combined in a B&O CD player

This luxurious package includes two Beolab 28s loudspeakers. Furthermore, the new edition contains over 90 percent of the original parts and is manufactured in the same factory in Struer, Denmark, where the first model was also produced. Both technologically and visually speaking, the Beosystem 9000c from Bang & Olufsen is quite the statement. According to the manufacturer, it is “both timeless and future-oriented.” And it comes at a price that is a bit out of this world, given the state of the CD industry.

What do you think the future of the CD will be like? With streaming services becoming increasingly popular and mass storage devices getting faster, bigger, and cheaper, the CD medium seems no longer necessary. At best, this CD tower could function as a cool retro product for merchandising purposes – but hardly for anything more. On the other hand, vinyl sales have been rising for a few years now, so could the CD be making a comeback?

The Bang & Olufsen Beosystem 9000c costs a pretty penny at 50,000 euros, and B&o will only ever make 200 units – so be quick! You can even control the CD player with the Bang & Olufsen app. In addition to the CD player, you’ll get six carefully selected CDs, two Beolab 28 Natural Aluminum/Cosmic Black speakers, a Beoremote One BT, a Beoconnect Encore, accessories, and an exclusive wooden welcome box.
