Ever wanted that JUPITER-8 sound with the crisp punch of a JUNO-60, layered with a JD-800? Well, now you can with Roland’s GALAXIAS! Now available as a VST3 plugin.

UPDATE: Roland Galaxias is now available as a VST3 plugin! To get access to this functionality, simply open up the Roland Cloud Manager and the update to v1.10 should be offered up to you straight away. No new functionality is offered other than the ability to host Galaxias as a VST3 plugin within compatible hosts.

Oddly, AU plugin support is still not available. this means that if you’re using Apple’s Logic Pro, you’re going to have to wait a little while longer.

Roland Cloud has come on leaps and bounds since its launch over five years ago. After a slow start, the subscription-based collection of instruments, effects, sample packs and patches has grown exponentially. It now supports many of its hardware products too. And just last week, they brought support for the fantastic DW Drums DWe kit. But if you check out other extensive software instrument collections, they have a master instrument that allows users to explore the entire suite from a single instrument. Arturia’s Analog Lab is a great example.

Introducing Roland GALAXIAS

Now Roland Cloud enters the fray with GALAXIAS. In their own words, it’s a ‘Super Instrument’ and exclusive to Roland Cloud. Running as a standalone application in macOS and Windows, it will also be available as a VST3/AU plugin, albeit (strangely) not at launch. GALAXIAS will allow Roland Cloud subscribers to navigate the 20,000+ sounds available to them from a single location. These include their Legendary synths, such as the JUPITER-8, TR-808 and JD-800. It also includes the Zenology-based instruments and their SYSTEM-8 synth.

Scene Stealing

With GALAXIAS, you can layer up to four instruments and also create Scenes. Scenes are able to be sorted into set lists, great for live performances, boasting gapless transitions. GALAXIAS provides two insert effects per layer as well as two global send effects. You can even route layers to external destinations so that you can process them even more.

The interface looks neat and well laid out. There are full-screen modes that allow for real immersion into the environment with the ability to focus in on Scenes, instruments or effects for detailed editing.

My Thoughts on the Roland GALAXIAS

Roland’s GALAXIAS looks like a real boon for Roland Cloud subscribers and adds a whole new sound design aspect to what is already a very impressive package. The ability to stack and blend synths from a broad selection of the synths and effects on offer is incredibly appealing. I can’t wait to jump into this!

More Information

GALAXIAS is available to all Roland Cloud Ultimate members. If you’re one of these, you should see it in the Roland Cloud Manager right away. There was a recent flood of point updates to many Roland Cloud instruments. You need to make sure you’ve updated all of these to have them work in GALAXIAS. A 30-day free Ultimate trial will provide non-subscribers with the GALAXIAS experience along with all other Roland Cloud goodies.

It’s worth noting that GALAXIAS does not support macOS 10, so if you’ve been putting off that OS update, this might tip you over the edge.
