The Line 6 Catalyst CX amp range updates the Helix-based guitar amp combos with new 12 amp models and 24 effects. Launching with the CX 200, CX 100, and CX 60 combo models. This latest update follows the new POD Express pedals using the same technology.
Line 6 Catalyst CX
The original Line 6 Catalyst range launched in 2022 and has been hugely popular with guitarists. Now, they have upgraded the line with the all-new Catalyst CX models. They now come with 12 amp voicings derived from the Helix line of amp modelling, plus 24 HX effects divided into four effects categories.
Each of the new 12 amp voicings offers a custom-matched boost.
This new range comes in the same formats as the original lineup:
- Catalyst CX 200: 200-watt dual-channel 2×12 combo
- Catalyst CX 100: 100-watt dual-channel 1×12 combo
- Catalyst CX 60: 60-watt dual-channel 1×12 combo
Flexible
The main advantages of this new range are the access to more tones and effects and the flexible nature of the design. They include a Tap/Tuner button, an XLR line output, and an effects loop.
Along with a Power Amp input for using Catalyst CX as a powered speaker, MIDI, a 2-channel USB recording interface, and power scaling output options. This allows users to halve the output and make the volume more manageable.
Affordable
Then factor in the affordable price point, which makes these amps very attractive. They offer all this and more if you want value for money and Helix-quality tones. This makes these amps perfect for home, stage and studio.
There is even a free Catalyst Edit app that users can access on desktop and mobile devices, providing deeper editing capabilities.
Firmware 2.0 Update
Line 6 has released a free 2.0 firmware update for owners of the original Catalyst amp models, giving them the same 12 amp models and 24 effects. This is a great move, and I am sure it will be welcomed in the guitar community. It will add those new delays, modulation, pitch shifting, filters, and reverbs, plus give them more amps to play with.
Verdict
There is a lot to like here, and this includes ease of use and the variety of tones on offer. These could make the perfect solution, for many musicians and the three formats/wattages available are all good choices. It is a thumbs up from me, and I think this is why so many musicians love Line 6 products.
