The iZotope Trash distortion plug-in has returned, with impressive creative features including multiband processing and spatial modelling.
With iZotope software falling under the Native Instruments umbrella, we can expect some exciting developments. Particularly with creative processors like Trash now in its 3rd version, there is no excuse for not delivering the best if you consider the R&D budget available.
iZotope Trash
In short, Trash is a modular multiband distortion processor with convolution modelling and numerous ways to shape individual sounds, channel groups, or an entire mix.
Processing starts with the Trash module on the left of the main GUI. Here, you can blend up to four different distortion types and even morph between them with the XY pad.
Next up, you have the Convolve module on the right. This allows you to send your signal through a huge range of different spaces or load your own wave files to be modelled by the convolution engine. Once again, you have the same flexibility with the XY pad, which can also be automated.
With the multiband section above, you can assign different sectors of the audio spectrum to be processed exclusively by either the Trash or Convolve modules. When combined with the mix controls, this can become a powerful tool for creating transitions in your music.
Furthermore, there is more sound shaping that can be done with the envelope follower and filter modules. While the envelope follower can be assigned to different destinations across the Trash interface, the self-oscillating filter has Scream and Heat controls for more tonal possibilities.
iZotope has also thought about gain structure, with input and output gain controls, as well as a limiter and separate auto-gain function.
