What Is TMT Bar And What Are Its Advantages?

Known for their fire and heat resisting properties, strength, and cost effectiveness, TMT steel bars are rampantly used in the construction industry and various other industries. That’s why, high quality TMT bars are the lifeline of construction projects. One of the main highlights of TMT bars is the enhanced protection against harsh environments.

Without further ado, let’s explore TMT steel price, definition, and advantages in this article.

Here we go!

Definition

TMT stands for Thermo Mechanically Treated, and TMT bars get their name and properties from the manufacturing process. These bars are made in such a meticulous way that load these bars with strength, toughness, and a dash of flexibility. Broadly, their manufacturing process has two key highlights:

  • First: The water pressure is optimised so that the bars have a tough exterior.
  • Second: Atmospheric cooling is used for balancing the temperature so that the bars have a soft interior.

The perfect blend of these activities packs the bars with durability, corrosion resistance, weldability, tensile strength, and elongation.

Types

TMT is categorised into two categories:

1.   Primary TMT: This type of steel is produced with the help of the primary steelmaking process which involves converting iron ore into molten iron in a blast furnace. Further, the molten iron is processed into steel.

2.   Secondary TMT: This type of steel is made using recycled steel scrap. In the process, scrap steel is melted and then processed into TMT bars.

While the secondary steelmaking process is a more environmentally friendly process as it uses recycled materials, due to the sheer difference in the steel making process, the properties of primary TMT may differ from secondary TMT. As far as price is concerned, since it directly uses iron ore primary TMT prices tend to be on the higher side as compared to secondary TMT.

TMT Steel Price Today

Mentioned below are SAIL Primary TMT Fe 500D prices:

·   Gurugram: ₹54,000/MT

·   Delhi: ₹54,000/MT

·   Faridabad: ₹54,000/MT

·   Ghaziabad: ₹54,000/MT

Key Features

Mentioned below are the features of TMT bars:

·       Pocket-Friendly: Being mindful of global steel price fluctuations, when it comes to zeroing down on construction materials, prices become a crucial factor. TMT steel price varies on the basis of its grade as well as size which ranges from 8mm to 25mm.

Thanks to their elongation value and tensile strength, a huge quantity isn’t required for construction. Also, their life is too long, that’s why they can last for many years. This leaves almost zero scope for immediate replacement.

  • Fire Resistant: Since these bars are employed as primary raw material for different types of construction be it buildings, bridges, flyovers, dams etc., these structures get constant heat exposure for a very long period of time. The heat resisting properties of these bars prohibit them from melting due to regular exposure to heat.

Additionally, in case of accidental fire, TMT bars’ mechanical properties can withstand heat exposure up to 600°C. This, in turn, keeps the cement intact enabling the structure to remain stable for a certain period of time.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Fe 550S, (‘S’ means saline tolerance), Fe 600, and Fe 550 TMT bars are used in marine projects. It is a pre requisite for the use of steel in coastal projects to have corrosion and rust resisting properties. Since these bars are thermally and mechanically treated, they have corrosion resisting properties.
  • Earthquake Resistance: In locations prone to high seismic activities, Fe 500 bars are used for RCC structural constructions and Fe 415 TMT bars are employed in constructing small residential buildings. These TMT grades are not just flexible, and strong, they can withstand high exposure to tremors and shocks. These grades have better elongation characteristics which reflect in strength that they provide to structures, hence they don’t get damaged on pressure. This is why, these grades are the perfect fit to be used in earthquake prone areas.
  • Flexibility: These bars are ductile and that’s why they can bend easily. The ribs on the outer surface enable them to bond well with cement or concrete. This, in turn, makes them compatible with building structures. One of a kind characteristic, TMT bars’ elongation prevents them from cracking.

Over To You

The primary TMT caters to different construction needs and the secondary TMT caters to different construction needs. In the construction sector, TMT bars are also preferred for prefabricated structures such as frames. This helps to save time and money as specific structures can be made in advance and stored off-site to be used later as and when required. This helps to speed up the turnaround time of construction projects.

TMT bars not only have anti rust properties, but they also provide longevity to the buildings/structures. From a maintenance point of view, they require minimum maintenance. That’s the reason why in the long run, they offer better returns on investment.
